Hong Kong was incorporated into the Qin Dynasty (214 BCE). Under the Tang and Song dynasties, it became a regional trading hub, with salt production and pearl fishing driving its economy.

The Opium Wars

After the First Opium War (1839–1842), China ceded Hong Kong Island to Britain under the Treaty of Nanjing — marking the beginning of a transformative chapter.
